get onto Google

Once I’ve created your website and it’s live, you’ll want to promote your site and get your site ranked as high as possible with the main search engines.

Google search results page include organic search results AND paid advertisements (Sponsored Links).

Advertising with Google won’t have any effect on your site’s presence in Google’s search results. Google never accepts money to include or rank sites in their search results, and it costs nothing to appear in the organic search results.

Free resources such as Webmaster Tools, the official Webmaster Central blog, and Google’s discussion forum can provide you with a great deal of information about how to optimize your site for organic search. Many of these free sources, as well as information on paid search, can be found on Google Webmaster Central.

Firstly, sign up for Google Webmaster tools (it’s free!) and verify your site (the directions are in the webmaster tools).  Also consider signing up for Google analytics (also free). Analytics will help you “see” who is visiting your site and how they are finding it, via searches, direct keying in of the URL or via links, etc.  Also where they are from, how many per day, etc.  Lots of good information.

add your site to Google

Click here to submit your URL to Google for the search engine:

There are other search engines that also have free submissions such as Yahoo and Bing.  Some search engines such as Yahoo do require you to register for free with them before you can include your information.

Once all that is done, promote your site!

  • Have all your friends/relatives/acquaintances visit the site on a regular basis. The simplest way to do this is to set their home page as your website so each time they open their browser, your site is accessed.
  • Promote your site on all your printed materials, stationery, advertising and by word of mouth.
  • Link to other similar sites and ask them to reciprocate…it will help draw traffic.

Do a search on promoting your site online and see what else others have done to increase traffic.

Getting your site to be “seen” by Google search takes a while.  It can take weeks and it is all about numbers…the more hits to your site the sooner it will move up the scale on the search list.  It can take about 2-3 weeks to show up on the Google search after submission to the URL listed above and about 500 visits.

Millions of people search Google Maps every day. A free listing on Google Maps makes it easy for them to find you.
